Closing soon: Media masterclass on reporting on violence against women

As Australians grapple with the increaseinviolentdeaths ofwomen this year,Our Watch is urginginterestedjournaliststoapply foritsprestigiousmasterclassseries to deepen knowledge ofreporting on the issue.   

Limited travel scholarships are available.   

The free professional development seriestakesa deep dive into understanding violenceagainst women and explores how responsible media reporting helps to prevent violence before it occurs.   

On average, one woman every nine days is killed by a current or former partner and 13 women a day arehospitalised. The media has a crucial role to play in shaping public opinion about violence against women.  

Places are available for those from traditional and new media.Early career journalists;those new to reporting on the issue; First Nations journalists; media professionals from refugee or migrant backgrounds; those from regional or rural areas; people with disabilities and sports journalists are encouraged to apply.   

Guestspeakers include award-winning investigative journalistNinaFunnell, GuardianAustralia senior producer NourHaydar, leadingIndigenous family violence researcherProf Kyllie Cripps,DART Centre Asia Pacific CEO Dr Erin Smith,andjournalismresearcher andeducator Amantha Perera. 

The series will incorporate prior online learning, expert guest speaker panels, two-way knowledge sharing,facilitateddiscussions, practicalexercisesand networking opportunities.   

Applicants must be available to conduct four hours of self-paced online learning, attend a two-day in-person workshop in Melbourne on Thursday 13 June and Friday 14 June 2024, and attend two 90-minute online forums between August and December 2024.
