Can Promotional Reward Programs Create Sustainable Enterprise Value in Digital Media?
Everybody loves getting something for free. It doesnt really matter whether its a free month of a subscription or a discount for being a customer for far too long; a reward is a reward, and well take it if its free.
Thats basically why promotional reward programs are everywhere in digital media now. If they actually work, they can keep people subscribed and make them less likely to disappear to a competitor the minute theres a better offer. But do they create sustainable enterprise value in digital media? Read on to find out.
Promotional Reward Programs in Digital Media
Promotional reward programs can be pretty simple. A streaming service might give subscribers early access to content, or a gaming platform could offer daily rewards or a bonus code. Per latest BallIsLifes guide to bonus codes, you can use gaming bonuses to activate enhanced promotions, and that usually applies to any reward program. The point is unlocking things other people dont get.
You can also have:
- Points and virtual currencies
- Referral rewards
- Discounted subscriptions
- Free trials
- Member-only content
- Daily or weekly rewards
- Loyalty tiers
- Competitions and giveaways
Casino platforms use a similar idea with things like loyalty points, free spins, and member promotions designed to reward continued play. eCommerce platforms and high street brands also run similar schemes with purchase reward points that eventually lead to discounts. For example, Rentd in the UK turned rent into travel with their reward program.
Creating Sustainable Enterprise Value in Digital Media?
A reward program is only valuable to a business if it eventually does something more than give free things away. The obvious benefit is retention. Getting somebody to subscribe to a streaming service or download an app is great, but its much better if theyre still there six months later.
Reward programs can also give businesses more information about what customers actually like. If somebody always chooses sports content rewards or keeps using offers connected to a specific game, thats useful first-party data that can help platforms personalize what theyre showing them.
And theres definitely money being put behind loyalty. Antavos 2025 Global Customer Loyalty Report found that businesses were allocating 31.4% of their marketing budgets to loyalty and CRM. Among program owners that actually measured ROI, 83% reported a positive return, averaging 5.2x what the program cost.
Thats where the enterprise value comes from. Youre hopefully building a customer who stays longer and spends more rather than simply giving somebody a $5 reward.
What Customers Want From Promotional Reward Programs
Customers mostly want rewards that are actually worth having.
Antavo also found that 69.8% of consumers joined loyalty programs for rewards, discounts, or cashback. More interestingly, 40.7% wanted points that didnt expire, and 40% wanted more ways to earn them.
Reward choice is also important. The same research found that 81.2% of consumers preferred shopping with brands that let them customize their rewards. Nobody really wants to collect 20,000 points over two years and then discover theyre worth a free digital sticker.
For digital media platforms, useful rewards could mean:
- Free subscription time
- Premium content
- Early access
- Discounts
- Digital items
- The ability to choose what the reward actually is
Designing Promotional Reward Programs
The first rule should probably be to keep it simple. If customers need to read three pages of terms to understand how many points they have and what theyre allowed to do with them, they wont do it.
A good program should make it obvious:
- How you earn rewards
- What theyre worth
- When you can use them
- Whether they expire
- What you can choose from
It also shouldnt feel impossible to reach anything worthwhile. People will quickly stop caring if every decent reward needs years of activity.
Personalization is also a big one. As long as it actually makes the rewards better rather than just sending more notifications. And if people have a choice between several rewards, theres a much better chance theyll find something they genuinely want.
Promotional rewards can create long-term value for digital media businesses, but only if customers also feel like theyre getting value from them. Otherwise, its basically just another points balance everyone forgets exists.
