California Rent Control Ballot Measure Now Proposition 33
Justice for Renters campaign – recently endorsed by the California Democratic Party and more than 100 elected officials – becomes Yes on Prop 33
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Justice for Renters Act, a November 2024 statewide ballot initiative that will allow for the expansion of rent control in California, is now Proposition 33. On Wednesday, California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber’s office formally released its list of ballot numbers assigned for qualified initiatives that will appear on the November ballot.
Two weeks ago, backers of what is now known as Proposition 33 released a list of more than 100 California elected officials, including Congressmember Maxine Waters, Congressmember Barbara Lee, Congressmember Ro Khanna, State Senator Ben Allen, State Senator Maria Elena Durazo, and Assemblymember Chris Holden, who have endorsed the Justice for Renters Act.
Other notable figures and groups who have endorsed Justice for Renters include the California Democratic Party, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), labor and civil rights icon Dolores Huerta; UNITE HERE Co-President Ada Briceño; and Democratic National Committee Member Christine Pelosi.
Other organizations that have endorsed Proposition 33 include Veterans’ Voices, California Alliance for Retired Americans, UNITE HERE Local 11, Coalition for Economic Survival, Social Security Works, Housing NOW, ACCE, Dolores Huerta Foundation, Mental Health Advocacy Services, American Federation of Teachers local 1521, and Housing is a Human Right.
The Justice for Renters Act is just 23 words: "The state may not limit the right of any city, county, or city and county to maintain, enact or expand residential rent control.” It would remove California’s statewide rent control ban and give local communities the right to stabilize rents and make apartments more affordable for low-income and middle-income renters.
