CUPE stands in solidarity with striking postal workers
OTTAWA, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- CUPE stands in solidarity with CUPW members as they return to the picket lines after the government’s announcement of a plan to allow Canada Post to end home delivery, slash delivery speed and shutter post offices across the country.
"After months of stalled negotiations, this announcement is another example of this government interfering in the process of free collective bargaining," said CUPE National President Mark Hancock. "CUPW members deserve the ability to address their working conditions at the bargaining table, and Canadians deserve reliable mail delivery - not repeated service cuts and a never-ending race to the bottom."
The cuts being proposed by Canada Post, and now enabled by the federal government, will undermine a vital public service that millions of Canadians rely on every day.
“Canada Post is a vital public service, and the Liberals are basically telling them to abandon their core mandate: to serve and deliver for the public," said CUPE National Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick. "Rather than enabling more cuts that will hurt the elderly, people with disabilities, and rural and remote communities the hardest, the Carney government must invest, innovate, and ensure Canada Post continues to deliver for all people and communities across Canada."
CUPE is joining CUPW in calling on the Carney government to reverse course in favour of proven options that support a robust postal service including expanding parcel capacity and bringing in a postal banking option that has succeeded around the globe in stabilizing postal services while adding needed banking infrastructure in smaller communities.
