CCAGW Honors “Taxpayer Hero” Sen. John McCain
WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) commended Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) for his relentless and unwavering support of the fiscal interests of American taxpayers while serving in Congress. Sen. McCain scored an impressive 94 percent in CCAGW’s 2015 Congressional Ratings, making him a “Taxpayer Hero.” Since he was elected in 1986, he has a lifetime rating of 90 percent, which is the highest of any senator who has been in office for more than seven years.
The report, which CCAGW has issued since 1989, highlights the voting records of all 535 members of Congress. It identifies members whose impeccable voting records helped protect and save the taxpayers’ money, while it cites members who consistently voted against the fiscal interest of taxpayers.
CCAGW rates members of both chambers on a 0-100 percent scale. Members are placed in the following categories: 0-19% Hostile; 20-39% Unfriendly; 40-59% Lukewarm; 60-79% Friendly; 80-99% Taxpayer Hero; and 100% Taxpayer Super Hero. The 2015 Congressional Ratings scored 100 votes in the House of Representatives and 35 votes in the Senate.
“We applaud and wholeheartedly thank Sen. McCain for his leadership over many years to protect the interests of taxpayers while serving in Congress,” said CCAGW President Tom Schatz. “His courageous votes to cut wasteful spending and make government more accountable should serve as an example to his colleagues. Sen. McCain was the first member of Congress to stand up against pork-barrel spending and there is no doubt that without his courageous campaign against such wasteful spending, Congress would not have agreed to a moratorium on earmarks in 2011. He is also now leading the fight to reform the Department of Defense procurement process so that billions of dollars can be saved and directed toward providing those who are serving our country with everything they need to protect America’s national security.”
“We have no doubt that Sen. McCain will continue to help lead the effort to end wasteful spending and reduce the growing national debt,” added Schatz. “His constituents should be very proud of him, and they should be confident that he will be on their side for many years to come.”
