Breakthrough Discovery Identifies the Cause of Bipolar Disorder

According to Dr. Walsh, these impairments usually are not sufficient to produce the illness during childhood or adolescence. However, several years of relentless free-radical assault and DNA damage eventually cause hyperactivity of major neurotransmitters and onset of mania. Serotonin neurons experience the greatest damage due to non-stop flooding of external potassium ions, leading to severe hypoactivity that causes the switch to depression. Recovery of serotonin function occurs automatically due to reduced potassium ion outflow and surviving clearance mechanisms that gradually eliminate potassium ion flooding.
