Beyond the Pad: Online Education Redefines the Fight Against Period Poverty

HARTFORD, Conn., Sept. 1, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- For too long, conversations about Period Poverty have focused solely on whether someone can obtain a pad or tampon when needed. While that access is understandably at the center of the issue, it is only the starting point. For those on the frontlines of this crisis - healthcare providers, researchers, and community leaders - it is becoming increasingly clear that access is only the starting point in an overlooked determinant of health, education, economics, cultural comforts, dignity, and opportunity.

Dignity Grows University (DGU) is shifting this narrative, proving that true progress requires moving beyond immediate relief to address the systemic, interdisciplinary, and cultural roots of Period Poverty. This online, live learning platform, which launched in January 2026, was created around a simple idea: people working to address Period Poverty need a place to learn from research, from lived experience, from practitioners, and ultimately from one another. By bringing together experts from diverse fields, including healthcare providers, educators, and non-profit leaders, DGU leverages multiple perspectives on Period Poverty. This interdisciplinary collaboration drives the development of more holistic, comprehensive solutions for those affected by this debilitating challenge.

"DGU encourages participants to ask not only, 'What is Period Poverty?' but also, 'Why does it exist, who is most affected, and what responsibility do we have to change the conditions that produce it?'" says LaWonder McDowell, DGU faculty member, Campus Chaplain for Central North Carolina University, and founder of the GMV Collective, which is dedicated to embodied education and reproductive journeys. "That makes the learning interdisciplinary, participatory, and connected to real communities rather than confined to a classroom or textbook."

In its inaugural year, DGU has facilitated three live virtual courses focusing on the role culture plays in menstruation, education and equality, and research that has occurred thus far in the field respectively, with two additional courses scheduled for the winter. The interactive sessions, held during the day run for two hours and are interactive; multiple speakers from different backgrounds present and participate in panel discussions, then work with participants in small groups, allowing for focused, organic discussion and mentorship.

A central goal of these evidence-based webinars is to ensure that every participant walks away with a comprehensive, nuanced understanding of Period Poverty. This goes far beyond acknowledging a simple lack of menstrual hygiene products to examining the systemic, cultural, and economic dynamics that perpetuate the crisis. The curriculum explores how cultural taboos foster silence and shame, while highlighting how the unaffordability or unavailability of essential products drives far-reaching, lifelong consequences. These impacts manifest as chronic school absenteeism, diminished academic achievement, workplace underperformance, compromised mental well-being, and severe physical health complications resulting from unsafe alternatives. By broadening awareness of these underlying determinants and outcomes, Dignity Grows University empowers participants of all backgrounds to deliver holistic, compassionate, and informed support to their peers, clients, patients, and broader communities.
