Ambient Carbon Destroys 90% of Dairy Barn Methane in Field Trial

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A field trial in Denmark shows Ambient Carbon's Methane Eradication Photochemical System (MEPS) eliminated up to 90% of dilute methane emissions from dairy barn air. MEPS uses a patented gas-phase photochemical process to break down methane.

It's the first real-world validation of a scalable technology for eradicating methane emissions from livestock barns, evidence that their emissions can be remediated at commercial scale.  

Conducted in a 250-cow, open-sided dairy barn at Hofmansgave Foundation in Denmark, the trial tested a MEPS unit in a 40-foot shipping container (previous tests used a smaller laboratory prototype).  

"The system successfully oxidized methane from dairy barn ventilation air across varying concentration levels, proving that MEPS works under real agricultural conditions with co-pollutants present," said Matthew S. Johnson, Ambient Carbon Co-founder & Chief Science Officer. "At concentrations from 4.3 ppm to 44 ppm, MEPS eradicated up to 90% of inlet air methane." 

The only highly effective, commercially viable solution for eradicating methane at concentrations below 1000 ppm, MEPS is a non-invasive technology which does not disturb cows, milk production, or barn operations. In addition to destroying methane, it also removes ammonia and other odors while generating sterile water vapor and fertilizer which can cut farmers' operating costs.  Modular design allows MEPS to be deployed in barns of various sizes, as well as manure storage facilities, biogas plants, and wastewater treatment plants. 

The MEPS field trial was supported by Danone North America and Benton Group Dairies, a major Danone North America supplier. Other collaborators include the Hofmansgave Foundation and PERMA Project partners Arla, the University of Copenhagen, Aarhus University, and SKOV, with additional support from Innovation Fund Denmark for the PERMA project via AgriFoodTure.
