Allergy & Asthma Network Applauds Clean Power Plan
VIENNA, Va., Aug. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Allergy & Asthma Network, the leading nonprofit patient education and advocacy organization, announced its strong support for the Clean Power Plan, a new initiative that will help combat climate change and reduce pollutants that can impact everyone, especially those vulnerable to dangerous chronic health conditions such as asthma.
The Clean Power Plan, announced today by President Obama, sets new national standards to limit carbon pollution from power plants, the largest source of carbon emissions in the United States.
"Climate change fueled by carbon pollution puts our families and communities at risk," says Tonya Winders, president and CEO of The Network. "Sometimes the air is too dangerous for children to play outside, and no parent should ever have that worry. Everyone deserves clean, breathable air. We commend President Obama and Gina McCarthy, Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)."
Scientists warn that higher temperatures caused by climate change can lead to longer and hotter heat waves, worse air in cities, more smog and ozone, and an earlier spring producing longer allergy seasons.
EPA estimates the Clean Power Plan will prevent up to 3,600 premature deaths, 90,000 asthma flares in kids and 300,000 missed work and school days by 2030.
The Network encourages families to contact their federal representatives and urge them to support environmental quality and the Clean Power Plan.
