ACTFL releases 2025-26 AAPPL and Additional Educator Resources

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Sept. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- ACTFL^® is launching the ACTFL Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL) with refreshed content for the 2025-26 academic year. The 2025-26 AAPPL, along with the recently announced ASL AAPPL, will be available to order through Language Testing International^® (LTI), the exclusive licensee of ACTFL assessments on September 15, 2025. The AAPPL is the only test with items that address a variety of topics across all modes of communication: Interpersonal Listening and Speaking (ILS), Interpersonal Interaction (II), Presentational Writing (PW), Interpretive Reading and Interpretive Listening (IR and IL), and Receptive Comprehension (RC).

With this release, ACTFL has developed an online course "Understanding the AAPPL in 30 minutes" for those who administer the AAPPL. The course provides educators with an understanding of how the AAPPL assesses students' proficiency levels, tips for preparing students to take the assessment, and an ACTFL Classroom Assessment Rubric (ACAR). The course will be available only through the secure LTI Client Site.

The AAPPL is available in the following languages: American Sign Languages (ASL), Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin), English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Unilingual Spanish. The AAPPL is third-party certified for compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), strengthening the commitment to safeguard learners' personal identifiable information (PII).

The AAPPL, developed by ACTFL and administered by LTI, is an assessment of performance toward proficiency that is designed to complement classroom-based language learning. As defined by the World-Readiness Standards for Learning Languages, the AAPPL is a standards-based assessment of tasks across the three modes of communication. AAPPL tasks are informed by the functions described in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines, and it is the only test with official ACTFL ratings assigned according to the ACTFL Performance Descriptors for Language Learners and by ACTFL-certified raters.
