A.M.BestTV: Europe’s Largest Markets Showing Signs of Recovery
OLDWICK, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- This final in a series of “First Monday” episodes for December highlights A.M. Best Senior Director, Analytics, Carlos Wong-Fupuy, A.M. Best Europe Rating Services Limited, addressing the subject of European insurers’ strategies to look overseas for growth due to saturated domestic and difficult economic markets. First Monday is A.M. Best’s monthly program featuring commentary by the company's leading analysts.
In a recent Best’s Special Report, titled, “European Insurance Markets Display Early Recovery Sign but Regulatory Issues Brew,” it was emphasized that the economic recovery has been somewhat uneven based on the sector and region. However, in 2014, signs of top-line growth were evident among Europe’s largest markets. “The difficult economic environment is definitely playing a role, but European companies have been expanding in emerging markets for a number of years,” said Wong-Fupuy. “Some of the reasons European companies are looking into emerging markets include: limited opportunities for growth and profitability, a high level of penetration in most markets and not much room for growth. Additionally, increased regulations in some particular lines of business, such as, life, make the emerging markets appealing.”
Wong-Fupuy also believes that looking at 2016 the main challenges to European insurers will be regulations and the continuing soft market.
