US Treasury designates Muslim Brotherhood branches as terrorist groups
The U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control designated the Egyptian and Jordanian branches of the Muslim Brotherhood as Specially Designated Global Terrorists under Executive Order 13224. The action was coordinated with the State Department and targets the organizations for alleged material support to Hamas.
"The Muslim Brotherhood has inspired, nurtured, and funded terrorist groups like Hamas, that are direct threats to the safety and security of the American people and our allies," said Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence John K. Hurley.
The State Department simultaneously designated the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood, known as al-Jamaa al-Islamiyah, as both a Foreign Terrorist Organization under section 219 of the Immigration and Nationality Act and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist. The department also designated Muhammad Fawzi Taqqosh, Secretary General of the Lebanese Muslim Brotherhood, as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist.
The Treasury stated these designations represent initial actions in what it described as an ongoing effort to counter Muslim Brotherhood activities. The designations aim to restrict the organizations' access to financial resources and limit their operational capabilities.
The actions were taken pursuant to President's Executive Order 14362 of November 24, 2025, titled "Designation of Certain Muslim Brotherhood Chapters as Foreign Terrorist Organizations and Specially Designated Global Terrorists," according to the Treasury announcement.
