The U.S. Department of the Treasury announced that Derek Theurer will perform the duties of Deputy Secretary of the Treasury, according to a statement from Secretary Scott Bessent.
Theurer joined the Treasury Department in January as Counselor, where he has assisted with global tax negotiations and implementation of tax policy initiatives. In March, he was nominated for the position of Deputy Under Secretary of the Treasury for Legislative Affairs.
"Derek's leadership and sound counsel have been critical as the Treasury Department works to implement President Trump's pro-growth agenda," Bessent said in the statement. "His ongoing commitment to serving the American people, deep policy acumen and legislative expertise, as well as years of operational experience make him the ideal person to perform the duties of Deputy Secretary."
Theurer holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from Utah State University, where he graduated summa cum laude. He earned a J.D. from UCLA School of Law and an L.L.M. in Taxation from NYU School of Law.
The announcement comes as the Treasury Department continues to work on tax policy implementation under the current administration.
