Trump says Ukraine peace resolution could come as soon as today

Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump expressed optimism Monday that a resolution to the Ukraine war could be achieved as early as today, following meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and European leaders at the White House.

"Think will come to resolution today," Trump told reporters, adding that a "peace agreement at end is attainable" and "can be done in near future."

Trump indicated that Russia has agreed to accept security guarantees, a key component in any potential agreement. He said his administration will "try to work out trilateral with US, Ukraine and Russia," with discussions needed on "who will do what" and "possible exchanges of territory."

While Trump stated that all parties "would prefer an immediate ceasefire while we work on a lasting peace," he acknowledged that "as of this moment that is not happening." Nevertheless, he remained "optimistic collectively we will reach an agreement to deter aggression on Ukraine."

Zelenskiy, who also spoke to reporters, emphasized that "all of us want to finish this war and stop Russia." The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of U.S. support, saying it’s "important that U.S. gives strong signal on security."

The Ukrainian president also indicated support for Trump’s proposed trilateral format, stating "Ukraine would be happy if Trump were there."

Trump claimed to have "had very successful day so far" and noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin "really would like to do something" regarding a peace agreement.
