Trump Impeachment Odds Still Very Low

Given the turmoil in Washington D.C. amid the continued Russian questions, the Comey firing and the leaking of classified intelligence, the word 'impeachment' can be heard at water-coolers across the country these days. However, according to one research firm the odds of impeachment proceeds, while moving up, are still very low.

Height Securities' Peter Cohn said impeachment proceedings are a "longshot and are inherently political, controlled by the majority party in Congress"

The firm assign odds at just 15% to such a massive erosion of support that leads to impeachment, resignation, or some other method of removal (such as the 25th Amendment).

That said, two weeks ago the firm's odds were zero.

"Such processes can take months if not years, but they can wrap up quickly once some major shoe drops," Cohn comments. "For example, the Nixon presidency was basically over once he was compelled to provide unedited access to tape recordings in the Oval Office by the U.S. Supreme Court, compelling Nixon’s resignation within weeks."

The firm is watching special elections for House seats in Montana on May 25 and in Georgia on June 20 for indications that the GOP is losing its grip on public support, which could cause other Republicans to begin calling for change at the top – a prerequisite for such drastic action.
