Who Would Imagine You Could Learn Morse Code with Puppies?

SAN MATEO, Calif., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- Announcing MorseBass.com, a free Morse-code learning platform uses music, podcasts, gamification, and puppies to make a retro communication technology accessible and fun.

"Advertisers write catchy tunes that stick in your head," said Dr. Lauren Speeth, President of Elfenworks Productions, "We're doing the same with Morse code: making it memorable, with catchy electric bass tracks… and real puppies acting out each word." Speeth – a musician and amateur radio operator – got the idea for adding puppies when her dogs, Ginger and Nutmeg, pawed at her book of Carol Kaye's basslines. "The pups are always interrupting my practicing," she noted, "So why not let them join the fun?"

Morse code (MC) is a beautiful, rhythmic form of communication, with letters / numbers represented by signals of short and long durations, in purposeful patterns. It requires no special equipment and can be expressed using light, touch, current, or sound. The Titanic famously signaled S-O-S (… --- …) as it was sinking.  People still use that universally recognized pattern to share their need for assistance when other forms of communication fail.

Yes, Morse code offers a lifeline, but there's more! A study in Frontiers in Human Neuroscience indicated MC learning leads to the sort of brain changes expected from other language learning (PMC5526915). A fresh take on a known language may offer a gentler learning curve than a foreign language, especially when tunefully accompanied by the MorseBass pups. The alternative, structured, rhythm-based framework may also appeal to some neurodivergent learners. Where barriers arise to standard communication, MC can re-open doors and bring renewed hope, so the team consulted a speech pathologist on key word choices. Some videos required costumes (e.g., "DOC") or symbols ("WHY"); the team's creative joy sparkles throughout.
