New survey finds Americans report high job satisfaction—yet show signs of risk aversion, visibility efforts, and self-censorship at work

DRAPER, Utah, May 14, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Amid ongoing economic volatility and cultural sensitivity, a new report from BambooHR®, the easiest-to-use people platform for HR, payroll, and benefits, reveals a paradox in the American workplace: while 84% of full-time employees say they're satisfied with their jobs, many are operating in survival mode.

Dubbed the "Eggshell Economy," this fragile environment has prompted workers to become more cautious, calculated, and inwardly focused—choosing stability over ambition and visibility over vulnerability.

Insights from the Eggshell Economy

BambooHR surveyed over 1,500 full-time, salaried professionals to understand how workers respond to an uncertain climate. The results paint a picture of cautious contentment:

Emotional and Financial Anchors

• 84% report job satisfaction, with work-life balance as the top reason for staying put.
• Financial security is a key differentiator: 95% of employees with savings express job satisfaction, compared to just 73% without savings.

Workplace Strategy and Visibility

• 54% of employees didn't apply to any jobs in 2024, defying expectations of a post-Resignation shuffle.
• 73% actively work to make their contributions visible, while 53% create "work barriers" to protect against job displacement.

Social Dynamics and Self-Censorship

• 52% of employees are more cautious about workplace discussions, citing heightened political sensitivity.
• 51% admit to self-censoring more than ever, a sentiment especially strong among VP/C-suite executives, 52% of whom have become more guarded on social media.

Research Methodology

BambooHR conducted this research using an online survey prepared by Method Research and distributed by RepData among 1,509 adults (age 18+) in the United States who are full-time salaried employees who currently work in a desk job position, including a subgroup of n=501 HR professionals who have a manager title or above. The sample was equally split between genders, with a spread of age groups, race groups, and geographies represented. Data was collected from March 4 to March 17, 2025.
