UL Research Institutes' Chemical Insights Releases Guidance on Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems

ATLANTA, July 2, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- UL Research Institutes' (ULRI) Chemical Insights released comprehensive guidance on electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). "Science Education and Research on Vaping and Interventions for Community Engagement" (SERVICE) is a resource on the use and safety of ENDS in the practice commonly known as vaping. This vital resource addresses several misconceptions that exist regarding the safety of vaping and summarizes different strategies that stakeholders, manufacturers, educators, health professionals, and community organizations can use to reduce health risks to users and bystanders.

This SERVICE guidance document was produced by an expert task force of professionals from academic institutions, medical research centers, and health care practices including the VA San Diego Healthcare System; Harvard University; Soft Smiles, LLC; West Virginia University; Louisiana State University; Center for Black Health ad Equity; Redan (Ga) High School; Purdue University; Georgia State University; New York University Langone Health; and ULRI.

"The SERVICE guidance document sheds light on the numerous misconceptions about vaping and the hazards associated with ENDS use," said Christa Wright, Ph.D., co-chair of the task force and Director of the Center for Toxicology and Human Health at Chemical Insights. "Safer does not mean safe and we try to dispel many of the myths around ENDS that lead people to believe it is a safer alternative to traditional cigarettes."

Among the misconceptions addressed in the guidance document:

• ENDS emissions are just water vapor
• Vaping is safer than smoking cigarettes
• Vaping doesn't hurt anyone around you
• Vaping is safe during pregnancy
• Vapes don't pollute the environment
• Using vapes along with cigarettes or marijuana is okay
• Vaping isn't addictive
