Tom Ruggie Publishes Article on Public vs. Private AI Investing on InvestmentNews
In the piece, titled "Investing in AI: Public versus private investments – What clients should know about the risks and opportunities," Ruggie notes the significant differences between public and private markets, highlighting liquidity, transparency, and volatility as major considerations for investors. While public markets may appear safer due to accessibility and reporting standards, private markets present the potential for outsized returns, especially in the fast-growing field of AI.
Ruggie, who was recently named the InvestmentNews Advisor of the year for Alternative Investments, has first-hand knowledge of what it takes to provide his Qualified Purchaser clients access to sophisticated, often difficult-to-obtain direct and private investments, which include a number of pre-IPO AI offerings, through his Destiny Alternative Fund.
"We are living through a once-in-a-generation moment with artificial intelligence," Ruggie wrote. "For the right investor, the opportunity to participate in AI's growth through private companies today could someday be viewed in the same light as getting in early on Apple or Amazon."
Ruggie discusses the risks inherent in early- and late-stage venture capital, the challenges of illiquidity, and the importance of diversification and disciplined strategy. He emphasizes that private investing is best suited for investors with a long-term horizon, high risk tolerance, and the ability to lock up capital.
With more than 35 years of experience, Ruggie has guided clients through multiple market cycles and believes AI presents both extraordinary opportunities and familiar risks. "The key," he explained, "is knowing when to take some chips off the table, having dry powder ready, and balancing risk with strategy."
