Postpartum Support International Updates Its Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) Program

Comprehensive Job Task Analysis completed in September validates the certification program and prompts release of an updated PMH-C blueprint

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its ongoing effort to provide access to quality care for people experiencing perinatal mental health disorders, nonprofit Postpartum Support International (PSI) is announcing updates to its Perinatal Mental Health Certification (PMH-C) program. The PMH-C certifies providers qualified to treat patients experiencing perinatal mental health disorders, including postpartum depression and anxiety (the perinatal period is defined as the period between conception and one year post-birth). 

The PMH-C creates a structure for professional education and evaluation of providers who give support to parents in the perinatal period, including but not limited to, mental health professionals and obstetricians to nurses, doulas, and lactation consultants. The certification curriculum requirements are established based on existing evidence-based perinatal mental health certificate training, with an advanced-training component. The computer-based certification examination establishes the performance standard for individuals practicing as perinatal mental health specialists.

"More than 6,000 providers have received the PMH-C certification since 2018, and as that number grows, so has the attention to the importance of this specialty," said Birdie Gunyon Meyer, RN, MA, PMH-C, Education and Training Director of Postpartum Support International. To keep the certification as current as possible, PSI conducted a Job Task Analysis with a standard-setting study for the program between May 2023 and September 2024. The purpose of the Job Task Analysis was to survey PMH-C professionals and update and validate the examination specifications for the PMH-C exam. The standard-setting study was conducted to determine the appropriate score at which candidates have demonstrated a sufficient level of knowledge and ability to practice as a PMH-C professional. In total, PSI received feedback from more than 1,100 previously certified providers, which was incorporated into the latest curriculum and certification exam.

"Experiencing a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder is stressful and many people experience feelings of fear, shame, or embarrassment as well. It can be difficult to know where to turn for help, to find a safe place where you know providers will understand," said Wendy Davis, PhD, PMH-C, President and CEO of Postpartum Support International. "The PMH-C makes it easier for affected parents to choose a provider they know will help them get better."

PSI's online Perinatal Mental Health Provider Directory lists specialized groups and providers, including those who have achieved the PMH-C, with their location and insurance coverage. PSI operates a Perinatal Psychiatric Consultation line, through which any medical provider can consult with an expert perinatal psychiatrist at no charge. PSI facilitates dozens of virtual support groups including those for military families, fathers, LGBTQIA+ families, Spanish-speakers, and more.
