Post-Election Poll Shows Elon Musk Beloved by Republicans but Despised by Democrats

Tesla Leader's Image Creates Big Challenge for Electric Car Maker as Potential EV Buyers Rate Other Brands Far More Favorably

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 5, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- A new poll from EV advocacy group the American EV Jobs Alliance has mixed news for Tesla leader and Donald Trump confidant Elon Musk.  The scientific poll of 600 registered voters, taken shortly after the November elections, shows Musk with surging support among Republicans but massively unpopular with Democrats.

"It's a very mixed bag for Elon," said American EV Jobs Alliance CEO Mike Murphy, a well-known political consultant.  "Republicans love him, but Democrats really hate him.  That might help him as the leading figure in the Trump administration, but his unpopularity with Democrats is a real headwind for Tesla in the U.S., since Democrats have been buying or leasing EVs at a rate 5 times that of Republicans."

The poll also showed Musk with a significant "gender gap" being rated far more favorably by women than men as well as being rated higher by gasoline car and pick-up truck drivers than by EV drivers.  Elon is also now poorly rated by voters who think climate change is a serious problem.

"It's all upside down", Murphy continued.  "The more skeptical you are about EVs, the more you like Elon Musk.  His image has become far more MAGA than EV."

The poll also compared favorable ratings of traditional car brands like Ford and Toyota with Tesla, finding more political polarization.

"Elon could become Nixon to China and start convincing Republicans who like him to consider EVs", Murphy said.  "Or it could evolve into the worst of both worlds for Tesla: Republicans still dislike EVs, and the Democrats abandon Tesla for other EV brands."

The American EV Jobs Alliance is a 501(c)(4) advocacy group working to protect North American EV jobs by fostering more bipartisan adoption of Electric Vehicles.

The poll was conducted by Hill Research was of voters with a family income of $50K or higher.  This income adjustment was made to target the poll at the new and used car market, while still also reflecting 2/3 of the voters in a typical Presidential election.  Margin of error was +/- 4% with a 95% confidence level.
