Sleep Index Survey Reveals More Than 50% of
In advance of Sleep Week, which includes the end of daylight saving time (
"Getting enough sleep is essential, but quantity alone isn't the full picture. True rest comes from both the right amount of sleep and good sleep quality, which is unique to each person. Prioritizing a consistent sleep schedule and a comfortable sleep environment, including your mattress, can make all the difference in how refreshed you feel each day," said Dr.
The national survey conducted in
A Disconnect Between Sleep Quantity and Quality
- Although the majority (58%) reported getting 7+ hours of sleep per night, 53% rate their sleep quality as "fair" or "poor."
- Women were more prone to sleep quality issues, with 55% of women rating their sleep as "fair" or "poor," compared to 50% of men.
Bedtime Behaviors: The Good, The Bad and The Restless
- When asked where they typically sleep best, the vast majority advised that they sleep best in their own bed (93%). However, many are overdue to invest in their sleep systems, with 26% reported that they are sleeping on mattresses past their prime (seven or more years old).
- Seven in ten said some kind of noise helps them sleep, with favorites including nature sounds (45%) and white noise (22%). Younger respondents (18-34-year-olds) especially opt for nature sounds (58%) to help them sleep – more so than any other generation.
- A third of respondents (35%) believe dreams have deep meanings, and one-quarter (25%) think dreaming is important to their wellbeing.
- However, the number of participants who remember their dreams is mixed with 38% rarely remembering their dreams and 32% reporting they often remember them.
- The Impact of Spring Awakenings on Sleep
- When it comes to daylight saving time, 44% love the longer daylight and adjust easily, yet nearly as many (40%) say it's outdated, frustrating and needs to go.
- 42% have had their sleep affected in some way by daylight saving time with women reporting feeling the effects on their slumber more than men (46% of women vs. 37% of men).
- Many indicated actively trying to protect their sleep while traveling. Methods to minimize lost sleep and jet lag vary greatly, but top tactics include booking only direct flights (28%), taking short exercise/stretching breaks during travel (27%) and traveling with their own pillow (26%).
