150 Missouri Teamsters Obtain Paid Sick Leave Despite Lawmakers' Veto

COLUMBIA, Mo., June 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Members of Teamsters Local 833, who provide student transportation for Columbia Public Schools, have ratified a new contract at Beacon Mobility subsidiary, DS Bus Lines. The new agreement includes a significant wage increase, access to a Teamsters 401(k) plan, and, most notably, paid sick leave.

"Having paid sick leave included as a part of the contract is huge," said Scott Evanoff, a 28-year bus driver at DS Bus Lines. "It means we don't have to choose between our health and a paycheck. For so many of us with families or health issues, this is about dignity and peace of mind. We couldn't have made this happen without the strength and support from the Teamsters."

In 2024, Missouri voters approved a ballot initiative that would grant paid sick leave to workers across the state, which was then vetoed by state legislators. Despite legislators going against the will of voters in an attempt to further strip working people of essential rights and protections, Local 833 was able to secure paid sick leave for DS Bus Teamsters and will continue to fight for the same protections for all members.
