10,000 Nurses Win Retroactive Economic Adjustments Once Denied by Employer

DETROIT, July 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The Teamsters Local 2024 Nurses for Nurses Bargaining Committee has won major economic improvements and assurances for nurses at Corewell Health East. The committee approved a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) that provides Teamsters nurses with substantial economic improvements previously withheld by the employer but given to nonunion employees in 2025. The MOA also guarantees that all future economic improvements provided to unorganized workers this year will be provided to Teamsters nurses.

"We told Corewell on Day One that equitable treatment of Teamsters nurses was our top priority," said Mike Smith, lead negotiator and Trustee of Local 2024. "While we are proud to have reached this agreement and secured nurses what they are rightfully owed, this is just the beginning of a longer fight."

The MOA will provide Teamsters nurses with several retroactive economic improvements, including a March 2025 general wage increase, the base pay market review and tier adjustments for advanced practice providers, a $250 bonus, shift differential and shift premium increases, and matching contributions to workers' 403(b) retirement plan.

The approval of the MOA comes one month after members of Local 2024 rallied alongside Teamsters General Secretary-Treasurer Fred Zuckerman, state and local officials, and union allies to demand that Corewell Health East end its attacks on unionized workers.

"Corewell should have never denied the Teamsters nurses our fair share just because we formed a union," said Sarah Johnson, a member of the negotiating committee. "This MOA solidifies that when Teamsters fight, Teamsters win — and that's the exact mentality we are heading into the rest of negotiations with. We are eager to get back to the bargaining table and solidify the foundation of our first union contract."

Progress continues to be made on important contract language, and the bargaining committee is working on an economic package for 2026 and beyond. Negotiations will resume August 6-8 in Detroit.
