ALTA Urges NFIP Extension Amid Government Shutdown

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- With a federal government shutdown underway, the American Land Title Association (ALTA) is calling on Congress to immediately extend the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) to protect real estate transactions and provide stability for families, businesses and communities. ALTA, along with other trade organizations, sent a letter to House and Senate leadership urging them to take action to extend the NFIP.

Without congressional action, a lapse in NFIP authority would leave millions of Americans unable to obtain or renew flood insurance policies, jeopardizing home sales in more than 22,000 communities nationwide. Buyers and sellers face delayed or canceled closings, while families risk higher costs through lender-placed insurance—or losing financing altogether.

Real estate transactions are especially vulnerable during a government shutdown, and NFIP's stability is critical to keeping the market moving. ALTA urges Congress to act quickly to extend NFIP and protect the American dream of homeownership.
