Advanced Micro Devices (NYSE: AMD) surged in late afternoon trading Tuesday following reports from Reuters the company has hired JPMorgan Chase to explore options, including a potential sale.
An outright sales is not a priority and the company could sell portfolio of patents, among other things, Reuters quoted sources as saying.
In an November 8th analyst report from Goldman Sachs, the firm suggested that AMD could sell its processor business. "We believe the plethora of companies that are now focused on vertical integration in the consumer electronics and/or data center markets, combined with the recent significant sell-off in AMD's stock, creates the possibility of M&A for AMD's processor business," analyst James Covello said.
If AMD's processor business is acquired it would suggest an enterprise value for processors of about $1.3 billion, Goldman calculates -- $900 million for the server part of the business and $400 million for the PC client part.
Shares of AMD last traded at $2.12, up 6.3 percent.
