Stocks Gain as Crimea Votes Overwhelmingly to Rejoin Russia
U.S. stock futures are indicated higher amid news the Crimean parliament voted to make the region an independent state, break away from Ukraine and rejoin Russia. Excluding Sevastopol, 97% of Crimeans participating in the vote voted to rejoin Russia, according to Crimean Referendum Commision Chairman Mikhail Malyshev.
Meanwhile, the U.S. immediately rejected the vote. "We reject the 'referendum' that took place today," White House spokesman Jay Carney said on Sunday.
Despite growing fears Russia's ambitions in Ukraine and the region will increase, investors in the U.S. are taking the news in stride. Dow futures are up 79 points, S&P 500 futures are up 9 points and Nasdaq futures are up 21 points.
