agilon health CEO Steven Sell steps down, co-founder takes over

agilon health (NYSE: AGL) announced that Steven Sell has stepped down as President, Chief Executive Officer, and Board Director. Ronald A. Williams, the company's co-founder and Board Chairman since 2017, has been appointed Executive Chairman.
The Board of Directors established an Office of the Chairman to assume Sell's responsibilities on an interim basis. The office, led by Williams, includes six senior executives: Chief Financial Officer Jeff Schwaneke, Executive Vice President and Chief of Staff Heidi Hittner, Chief Medical Officer Karthik Rao, Chief Markets Officer Ben Shaker, Chief Technology Officer Girish Venkatachaliah, and Chief Legal Officer Denise Zamore.
Williams previously served as Chairman and CEO of Aetna from 2006 until his retirement in 2011. He also held the position of President and Director at Aetna beginning in 2002. Before joining Aetna, Williams was President of the large group division at WellPoint Health Networks and President of Blue Cross of California.
The Board has initiated a search for a permanent CEO and is working with an executive search firm. Williams currently serves as an Operating Advisor to CD&R and Lead Director at Warby Parker.
agilon health also reported its second quarter 2025 earnings results and withdrew its full year 2025 earnings guidance in conjunction with the leadership transition.
"During his tenure, agilon expanded our value-based care model, broadened our partnerships with primary care physicians across the country, and built a deep and talented team," Williams said about Sell's departure.
The company partners with over 2,200 primary care physicians and operates in 30 communities, providing technology and support for value-based care for senior patients.
