Sarepta Therapeutics (NASDAQ: SRPT) has appointed Michael Severino, M.D., as chief executive officer, effective July 28, 2026, according to a company statement. Severino will also join Sarepta's Board of Directors.
Severino succeeds Doug Ingram, who is retiring from the Cambridge, Mass.-based company. Ingram will remain in an advisory capacity through the end of 2026.
Severino most recently served as CEO of Tessera Therapeutics and as a CEO-Partner at Flagship Pioneering, roles he held since 2022. Before that, he was Vice Chairman and President at AbbVie, where he oversaw research and development and the corporate strategy office. His career also includes senior roles at Amgen, where he served as Senior Vice President, Global Development and Chief Medical Officer, and at Merck & Co.
"It is a privilege to join Sarepta," Severino said. "I look forward to working with my new colleagues at Sarepta to continue to serve the Duchenne community and expand our reach."
M. Kathleen Behrens, Ph.D., chairperson of Sarepta's board, said the appointment followed a search that identified multiple candidates. "Over a distinguished 25-year career in biopharmaceuticals, Mike has demonstrated a combination of scientific depth, development expertise, and proven execution that consistently delivers results," Behrens said.
Severino holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Maryland, College Park, and an M.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He completed his residency and post-doctoral training at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He also serves on the boards of Avantor, Montai Health, Quotient Therapeutics, and Viatris.
Sarepta focuses on genetic medicine for rare diseases, including Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and holds approvals for two exon-skipping treatments as well as a gene therapy for Duchenne.
