Century Aluminum expands Mt. Holly smelter, boosting U.S. output 10%

July 27, 2026 9:00 AM EDT

Century Aluminum held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its Mt. Holly smelter in Goose Creek, South Carolina, on July 27, 2026, marking an expansion the company says will increase total U.S. domestic primary aluminum production by approximately 10%.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Senior Counselor to President Trump Dr. Peter Navarro, South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson, and Century Aluminum CEO Jesse Gary attended the event and delivered remarks.

According to a statement from the company, the expansion is a result of the Section 232 national security tariff on aluminum imposed under the Trump administration. The Mt. Holly facility's workforce is expected to grow to more than 600 employees following the expansion.

Century Aluminum is listed on the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker NASDAQ: CENX.
