BioCryst names Charlie Gayer as next CEO after Jon Stonehouse retires

BioCryst Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: BCRX) announced that Chief Executive Officer Jon Stonehouse will retire on December 31, 2025, with Chief Commercial Officer Charlie Gayer succeeding him as CEO effective January 1, 2026.

Gayer will become president on August 1, 2025, and join the company's board of directors when he assumes the CEO role. Stonehouse will remain on the board after his retirement.

The leadership transition comes as BioCryst has established commercial operations around its drug ORLADEYO (berotralstat), an oral treatment for hereditary angioedema. The company expects peak sales of $1 billion for the product. Gayer has led the commercial organization responsible for ORLADEYO's launch since becoming chief commercial officer in January 2020.

"We want to thank Jon for building BioCryst into the commercial, profitable company it is today, with such a bright future," said Nancy Hutson, chair of the board. She noted that Gayer emerged from the board's evaluation of internal and external candidates for the succession.

Gayer joined BioCryst in 2015 as vice president of global strategic marketing. Before BioCryst, he held commercial leadership positions at Talecris Biotherapeutics Inc. and later at Grifols S.A. after its acquisition of Talecris in 2011. He previously worked at GlaxoSmithKline and Genzyme Corporation.

Gayer holds a bachelor's degree in politics from Princeton University and an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business.

The company also referenced its planned sale of European operations, though specific details about the transaction were not provided in the announcement.
