American Public Education Inc. (NASDAQ: APEI) appointed James Kenigsberg as interim Chief Innovation and Technology Officer, the company announced. Kenigsberg will step down from his role as a member of the APEI Board of Directors to focus on the executive position.

Kenigsberg brings over two decades of experience in educational technology leadership. He served as founding Chief Technology Officer at 2U Inc., helping scale the company from a startup in 2008 to a global education technology company until 2022. Since then, he has worked as a strategic advisor to Udemy, Andela, and other education-focused companies, including APEI.

"We are thrilled to welcome James Kenigsberg as our interim Chief Innovation and Technology Officer," said Angela Selden, President and CEO of APEI. "He has proven to be an invaluable resource on our Board of Directors, and his leadership and experience will be instrumental as we expand access and improve outcomes for those who serve and lead in their communities."

In his new role, Kenigsberg will lead the integration of artificial intelligence and data across admissions, academic operations, career pathways, and learner support. The company stated it is transitioning to become a data-first, AI-enabled institution.

APEI operates through three educational institutions: American Public University System, which serves approximately 88,000 adult learners worldwide; Rasmussen University, a 125-year-old institution with about 14,900 students across 20 campuses in six states; and Hondros College of Nursing, which serves approximately 3,700 students across eight campuses in Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

"I am honored to join the APEI executive team to focus on building intelligent systems powered by AI and data that truly understand and support the learner," Kenigsberg said.
