InterDigital wins second UPC injunction against Disney over HEVC

InterDigital, Inc. (Nasdaq: IDCC) has been awarded a second injunction against Disney by the Unified Patent Court (UPC), a pan-European court whose rulings apply across multiple European Union member states.

The Düsseldorf Local Division of the UPC ruled that Disney infringed an InterDigital patent covering video encoding techniques related to High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). The court also confirmed the validity of the patent. The injunction covers 11 EU countries, including France, Germany, and Italy. Disney has the option to appeal the decision.

This is the second HEVC encoding-related injunction InterDigital has received from the UPC against Disney. Additional injunctions have been issued by national courts in Germany and Brazil related to Disney's alleged infringement of InterDigital patents covering high dynamic range (HDR) technology, dynamic overlaying of multiple video streams, casting video content across devices, and compression technologies related to HEVC and AVC.
