Court dismisses criminal charges against former Cassava Sciences advisor

A federal court in Maryland dismissed criminal charges against Hoau-Yan Wang, a former scientific collaborator and advisor to Cassava Sciences Inc. (NASDAQ: SAVA), according to a company statement.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland granted the government's unopposed motion to dismiss the indictment with prejudice on October 23. The order permanently terminates the case against Wang, and related charges cannot be refiled.

The dismissed charges accused Wang of causing Cassava to submit grant applications to the National Institutes of Health containing allegedly false representations about his research. The indictment also alleged Wang manipulated research results, including Western Blot images he prepared.

Wang conducted foundational research on simufilam, Cassava's investigational drug. The company stated it continues its program evaluating simufilam as a treatment for Tuberous Sclerosis Complex-related epilepsy, based on research conducted at multiple institutions.

The dismissal removes a legal uncertainty that had surrounded the biotechnology company's drug development efforts. Cassava Sciences develops treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.
