Court awards Klarna's PriceRunner $1.97B in Google antitrust case

Klarna Group plc (NYSE: KLAR) announced that a court has ruled in favor of its PriceRunner subsidiary, awarding $1.97 billion in damages in an antitrust case against Google.

The case centered on Google's alleged preferential treatment of its own comparison-shopping service over independent price-comparison services. The ruling compensates PriceRunner for lost revenue stemming from that conduct.

Klarna acquired PriceRunner in 2022. The company has since expanded PriceRunner's Search & Compare feature to 13 markets, with its database covering more than 100 million products and 500 million merchant listings.

Dan Greaves, Head of Communications and Policy at Klarna, said: "This ruling supports a healthier, more competitive market for the way people compare products and services — and that is good for everyone who shops."

Klarna noted that the award remains subject to appeal by Google. Any amount ultimately received would also be reduced by sharing arrangements with former PriceRunner shareholders and Klarna's litigation funder, as well as applicable taxation. The company stated the value of the claim should not be taken as an indication of any likely recovery or future settlement.
