Cerence Inc. (NASDAQ: CRNC) filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission against Amazon.com, Inc. and Amazon.com Services LLC, seeking to block imports of products that allegedly infringe on the company's voice technology patents.

The Burlington, Massachusetts-based company also filed district court actions against Amazon entities, including Amazon Web Services, Inc., in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

The ITC complaint, filed under Section 337 of the Tariff Act of 1930, requests a limited exclusion order that would prohibit the importation of certain smart devices into the United States. The devices include smart speakers, smart displays, smart televisions, tablets and smart streaming devices that Cerence claims infringe on its voice technology patents.

According to the company's press release, the lawsuits cover conversational AI technology that Cerence has developed and deployed across its products and customer programs. The company states these technologies are used without authorization across Amazon devices and platforms.

"These actions reflect our commitment to defending the patented technologies that underpin our products and enable the conversational AI-powered experiences our customers rely on," said Jennifer Salinas, executive vice president, chief administrative officer, general counsel and corporate secretary at Cerence AI.

Cerence describes itself as a provider of AI-powered automotive and transportation experiences, with technology shipped in more than 525 million cars. The company works with automakers, transportation original equipment manufacturers and technology companies.
