Adeia wins patent case against Videotron in Canadian federal court

The Federal Court of Canada ruled in favor of Adeia Inc. (NASDAQ: ADEA) in a patent infringement case against Videotron Ltd., awarding the company a permanent injunction and damages.

Justice Gagné issued the judgment on October 24, finding that Videotron's Helix, illico+ and illico video platforms infringe an Adeia media patent. The court also determined that Videotron's Helix video platform infringes an additional Adeia media patent and awarded damages for both patents. Two other patents in the case were ruled invalid.

"We are very pleased with the Federal Court's decision," said Kevin Tanji, chief legal officer at Adeia. "This outcome underscores the strength of Adeia's intellectual property and the critical role our innovations play in advancing media and entertainment technologies."

The full court decision remains under confidentiality restrictions, with a public version expected to be released shortly. Both parties have until late November to file a notice of appeal.

Adeia operates as a research and development company focused on intellectual property licensing in the media and semiconductor industries. The company's patent portfolios cover technologies used in connected devices and digital entertainment systems.
