While the latest divorce of News Corp's Rupert Murdoch has grabbed all of the headlines of late, the divorce of another billionaire could be the one to pay attention to.
Continental Resources' (NYSE: CLR) CEO Harold Hamm is worth at least $11 billion. With no prenuptial agreement and allegations he was unfaithful, wife Sue Ann could get billions in a settlement.
Oklahoma attorneys familiar with the case say a settlement could cost Mr. Hamm $3 billion or more, according to Reuters. This would be the largest divorce settlement in history, 60% higher than the $1.7 billion paid by Murdoch in the settlement with his previous wife Anna in 1999.
The settlement could make Sue Ann, 56, one of the 20 wealthiest women in America - worth more than Oprah Winfrey, who is estimated to be worth $2.8 billion.
Continental Resources shareholders are paying close attention to the settlement as Hamm could be forced to sell a portion of his 68% stake in the company to make good on the settlement.
If a $3 billion settlement was financed by selling Continental shares, it would lower Hamm's stake in the company below the 50% threshold, according to a Reuters analysis.
