White House asks US Ambassador to Greece to resign
Investing.com -- The White House announced Tuesday that it requested the resignation of US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia confirmed the decision during a briefing, saying the administration asked Guilfoyle to step down. Zacharia added that Guilfoyle has been a valuable member of the team and expressed well wishes for her future.
The request follows comments from US President Donald Trump on Monday, when he told reporters the administration was considering dismissing Guilfoyle, stating "We're not happy."
US lawmakers had previously raised concerns about allegations that Guilfoyle threatened to use American influence to undermine the Greek government.
Greece serves as a NATO ally to the United States and provides military facilities that support security operations in the Eastern Mediterranean. The country also leads a European Union maritime mission focused on protecting commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
