Wells Fargo upgrades S&P 500 Industrials to favorable
Investing.com -- Wells Fargo Investment Institute on Tuesday upgraded the S&P 500 Industrials sector from neutral to favorable, citing .
The upgrade reverses the firm's July 16, 2026 downgrade. Since that change, Industrials underperformed the broader S&P 500 Index by about 7.8% through September 24, 2026, according to the analysts.
Wells Fargo analysts said the sector remains positioned at the center of several investment cycles. AI infrastructure has continued to drive demand for power generation, grid equipment, electrical systems, heating and cooling equipment, backup generation, and construction machinery.
Existing backlogs provide visibility into at least early 2027 for shorter-cycle equipment and into 2030 or later for portions of the power-generation and electrical infrastructure markets, the analysts noted.
The firm said increased infrastructure and defense spending, manufacturing reshoring, commercial-aerospace demand, and improving general industrial activity should broaden participation beyond the sector's early AI beneficiaries.
Wells Fargo acknowledged risks including input-cost inflation, capacity constraints, elevated valuations in select companies, slower order growth, and the possibility that industry capacity expansion eventually creates excess supply.
However, the analysts say strong pricing power, extended backlogs, high barriers to entry, disciplined capacity additions, and improving end-market breadth should help leading companies absorb near-term cost pressures and convert demand into earnings.
