Wells Fargo downgrades S&P 500 tech sector to neutral
Investing.com -- Wells Fargo Investment Institute downgraded the S&P 500 Information Technology sector from favorable to neutral on Tuesday, citing the recent rally as well as AI uncertainties.
The firm upgraded the sector from neutral to favorable on April 6, 2026, when risk-taking sentiment was subdued due to uncertainties surrounding the war in Iran. From that date through September 17, 2026, the information technology sector rose nearly 33% based on the S&P 500 Information Technology Index, outperforming the S&P 500 Index by more than 15%.
The analysts noted that they continue to believe the sector's artificial intelligence tailwinds likely have further room to support above-market sales and earnings growth. Many of the sector's traditional quality characteristics remain intact, including strong free cash flow generation, healthy balance sheets, and meaningful shareholder returns through share repurchases.
Importantly, they also mentioned that sector's quality profile is not quite as differentiated as it was prior to the current AI investment cycle, as companies have increasingly supplemented internal funding sources with debt issuance to support outsized infrastructure investments.
"Considering elevated expectations and bullish sentiment, we see a more balanced risk-reward outlook and suggest that investors maintain a market-weight allocation while awaiting a more attractive entry point," the analysts said.
