Vanguard-bound Altruist expands AI platform with financial planning agent
Investing.com -- Wealth technology platform Altruist has introduced an artificial intelligence-driven financial planning agent within its Hazel platform less than a week after the announcement of a major takeover by Vanguard. The tool generates financial strategies across six core advisory workflows, including retirement, tax strategy, and estate planning, aimed at streamlining manual planning processes that historically consumed hours of advisor time.
Hazel gathers client intelligence from meeting transcripts, documents, and communication logs, but routes all numerical calculations through dedicated calculation engines rather than generative models, the company noted. To address institutional privacy standards, the platform operates under zero-data-retention agreements that prohibit third-party AI providers from storing client data or using it for model training.
Altruist is making the capability available to registered investment advisors regardless of whether they custody assets directly on the firm’s self-clearing brokerage engine. Altruist Chief Executive Officer Jason Wenk noted that the technology enables an individual advisor to match the output of a full specialist team, marking the second phase of a broader rollout of advanced planning solutions.
While financial terms were not officially disclosed in the August 26 deal announcement, Axios reported that Vanguard is paying $4.6 billion in cash for the platform. The price tag represents a steep step-up from Altruist’s $1.9 billion post-money valuation in early 2025, following more than $600 million in venture capital funding.
The transaction reflects Vanguard’s broader effort to expand deeply into lucrative advisory services, positioning the firm to compete more directly with custodial giants Charles Schwab and Fidelity despite its traditional focus on low-cost index funds. At the time, Vanguard Chief Executive Officer Salim Ramji framed the acquisition as a strategic initiative to overcome industry capacity constraints by pairing automated digital workflows with human advisory relationships.
Following the expected close of the transaction later this year, Altruist will operate as a standalone business under Vanguard’s ownership to preserve its development momentum and brand identity. Against that backdrop, Hazel’s newest features position Altruist to accelerate advisor adoption while giving Vanguard a direct technology bridge to the independent wealth management space.
