Ukraine negotiator sees progress toward peace deal with Russia

Investing.com -- Ukraine’s chief negotiator with Russia said talks are advancing toward a potential peace deal, suggesting a resolution to the conflict may be achieved soon.

Kyrylo Budanov, who heads President Volodymyr Zelenskiy’s office, said he believes Russia also wants to end the war. "They all understand the war needs to end. That’s why they are negotiating," Budanov said in an interview with Bloomberg News last week that was published today. "I don’t think it will be long."

Budanov served as head of Ukraine’s military intelligence from 2020 until January, when Zelenskiy appointed him to his current position. He is a key figure in three-way talks with the US and Russia aimed at ending the war, now in its fifth year.

He also oversees prisoner exchanges with Russia that have brought hundreds of Ukrainians home from captivity. Budanov retains his army rank as lieutenant general.

Ukraine dollar bonds extended their rally Friday, rising the most in emerging markets. The country’s debt security due in 2034 rose almost 4 cents on the dollar to around 62 cents, the highest in a month.

The Kremlin said Friday that a visit to the US by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special investment envoy did not mean negotiations on a peace deal had resumed. Kirill Dmitriev, Putin’s envoy, was in the US meeting members of President Donald Trump’s administration for discussions on a peace deal and US-Russia economic cooperation, Reuters reported Thursday.
