Uber president Jill Hazelbaker joins OpenAI as communications chief
Investing.com -- Uber Technologies Inc. announced Tuesday that President Jill Hazelbaker will leave the ride-hailing company to become chief corporate affairs officer at OpenAI, where she will oversee global communications and corporate positioning efforts.
Hazelbaker joined Uber in 2015 after working at Snapchat Inc. and Alphabet Inc.'s Google. She held a key position during the company's early period under co-founder and former Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick, leading policy and communications operations.
She became a senior adviser to current CEO Dara Khosrowshahi and advanced to become one of Uber's top executives. In May, the company promoted her to president and chief corporate affairs officer, adding human resources and real estate functions to her responsibilities.
Around a month after her promotion, Hazelbaker announced plans to eliminate 23% of positions in Uber's human resources division to simplify organizational structure. The company later conducted a broader round of layoffs affecting 10% of its workforce to reduce bureaucracy.
Her exit follows other senior leadership departures at Uber. Sarfraz Maredia, the company's global head of autonomous mobility and delivery, will leave later this month after more than 12 years. Susan Anderson, who led Uber's delivery business, left in June after nearly a decade with the company.
