U.S. DoJ targets birth tourism after Supreme Court ruling

Investing.com -- The U.S. Justice Department directed federal prosecutors on Tuesday to prioritize investigations into birth tourism schemes following the Supreme Court's rejection of President Donald Trump's attempt to restrict birthright citizenship in the United States.

Colin McDonald, a senior Justice Department official, informed employees in a memo that individuals who enter the United States under "false pretenses" to give birth and obtain citizenship for their child could face criminal charges under laws prohibiting visa fraud, money laundering, identity theft and wire fraud.

"The Department of Justice will zealously protect the sanctity of United States citizenship by investigating and prosecuting those who fraudulently exploit our immigration system," McDonald wrote in a memo to all DOJ employees that was posted on social media.

The directive comes after the Supreme Court blocked the administration's effort to limit birthright citizenship protections.
