U.S. Democrats press tech giants on Trump ballroom donations - WSJ

Investing.com - A group of Democratic legislators are pressing the heads of Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta to unveil details around their donations to President Donald Trump’s White House ballroom, the Wall Street Journal has reported.

Citing letters to executives, the WSJ said the lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Massachusetts) and Rep. Dave Min (D-California), flagged that many of the donors to Trump’s $250 million ballroom -- which is now under construction -- already have business or contracts with the federal government. The lawmakers subsequently raised concerns over possible quid-pro-quo relationships between these firms and the Trump administration, in which the donations may lead to more favorable treatment.

In a statement quoted by the WSJ, semiconductor titan and artificial intelligence-darling Nvidia said its support for the U.S. is "paramount" and "independent of any business interests." Meta and Microsoft declined to comment, while others did not respond to requests for comment, the WSJ said.

A host of these companies sent representatives to a White House dinner in October establishing the ballroom, an initiative that Trump has described as a central part of his presidential legacy, the paper noted.

More information was also requested on Comcast and Union Pacific Railroad, two groups that currently have key mergers or other arrangements up for review by Trump officials, the WSJ reported.

NBC Universal-owner Comcast has, in competition with Netflix and Paramount, reportedly submitted bids for the entertainment and streaming assets of Warner Bros Discovery. Union Pacific, meanwhile, unveiled a proposal earlier this year to purchase peer Norfolk Southern as part of a deal that would create the first-ever transcontinental railroad in U.S. history.
