Trump warns he will defend Diego Garcia base if deal falters

Investing.com -- U.S. President Donald Trump stated Thursday that he had "very productive discussions" with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the island of Diego Garcia, home to a major U.S. military base in the Indian Ocean.

In a Truth Social post, Trump described the base as "strategically situated" and "of great importance to the National Security of the United States."

While acknowledging that Starmer had made "the best deal he could make" according to many, Trump issued a clear warning about the future of U.S. presence on the island.

"If the lease deal, sometime in the future, ever falls apart, or anyone threatens or endangers U.S. operations and forces at our Base, I retain the right to Militarily secure and reinforce the American presence in Diego Garcia," Trump wrote.

The president emphasized the importance of U.S. military bases for staging operations, noting that American military operations over the past year were successful due to "the strength of our warfighters, modern capability of our equipment and, very importantly, the strategic location of our Military Bases."

Trump added that he would "never allow our presence on a Base as important as this to ever be undermined or threatened by fake claims or environmental nonsense."

The Diego Garcia base serves as a key U.S. military installation in the Indian Ocean region.
