Trump urges Senate to end filibuster
Investing.com -- President Trump urged Republicans to terminate the Senate filibuster rule, claiming it would enable the party to pass key legislation and improve electoral prospects.
In a statement, Trump argued that keeping the filibuster intact would make it "impossible for Republicans to get Common Sense Policies done" as Democrats could block legislation by withholding votes.
"If we don’t do the Termination of the Filibuster, nothing will be passed for three years, and Republicans will be blamed," Trump wrote, suggesting this would lead to "brutal" midterm election results.
The president claimed eliminating the filibuster would allow Republicans to approve legislation for "fair, free, and safe elections," prevent transgender participation in women’s sports, strengthen borders, implement tax and energy cuts, and protect Second Amendment rights.
Trump warned that Democrats would likely end the filibuster themselves when given the opportunity, noting they had previously attempted to do so when "the only two people who didn’t go along are now out of office."
However, Senate Majority Leader John Thune indicated on Monday that there isn’t sufficient support among Republican senators to eliminate the filibuster, despite the president’s increasing pressure to change Senate rules to allow simple-majority passage of legislation.
