Trump seeks border funding bill by June 1
Investing.com -- President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that Republicans will move forward with legislation to fund Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and Border Patrol without Democratic support, bypassing the Senate filibuster.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said he is working with House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Leader John Thune to advance the funding measure through a process that does not require Democratic votes. He requested the bill reach his desk no later than June 1.
Trump stated that during the current funding gap, his administration has been using money from what he called "THE GREAT BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL" to ensure ICE and Border Patrol agents receive their pay on time and in full.
The president criticized Democrats, claiming the party wants to defund law enforcement and immigration agencies. He accused the previous administration of allowing illegal immigration during its four-year term.
Trump called on voters to support Republican candidates in the upcoming midterm elections, saying unified Republican control would enable the party to pass legislation without Democratic participation.
The president also suggested the Senate filibuster should be repealed immediately, though he did not provide details on how such a change would be implemented.
