Trump says US to keep buying potash from Canada

Investing.com -- US President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States will continue purchasing potash from Canada, while noting that Belarus has offered to sell the fertilizer at a lower price.

Trump made the comments to reporters during a bilateral meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

"Belarus has a lot of potash, and our farmers need good prices," Trump said. "We'll continue to go with Canada, but Belarus would like to sell it for a much lower price."

Trump first mentioned the potential Belarus purchase on Monday. The proposal indicates his approach to using alternative suppliers as leverage in trade disputes with Canada, which provides most US potash imports.

The move could represent a continued warming of relations between Washington and Belarus following the removal of sanctions.
